First allow me to apologize for my very lengthy absence from The Reportery. What was meant to be a few week hiatus so I could focus on the conference turned into accepting a new job, dealing with my new daily commute to San Francisco and getting my life in order. That being said..
Christmas. How is it over? I am pretty much ignoring that there is one day left of December and continue to put my Christmas lights on every night when I get home. Eventually I will have to get rid of them but till that fateful day of lets say Jan 9th I refuse.
This year was a huge success! My family comes from many (try 7) different cultures so I try to pay tribute to them during the holidays. This year German won and I have to say it was one of the best Christmas dinners I’ve made in a long time. It reminded me of my grandma’s house and my mother said it was like going back to her childhood. All in all extremely happy with it. Christmas dinner can be anything you like, I have many friends who make turkey, others who prefer ham. Some that do fish or others beef. Some dinners are fancy, some incredibly easy. It’s whatever you think your family would enjoy, because that is what the holidays are for – loved ones.
On that note here are the recipes should you ever feel like cooking a delicious German meal. Continue reading “Christmas 2014”
How many mothers or grandmothers have added flour, butter and milk and kneaded it into the perfect flaky biscuit? Or realized that if you add milk and flour to heat a delicious gravy will soon follow after? Sometimes tradition is the best thing for the soul as I was so amazingly reminded of when I made the recipe below.
Biscuits & gravy are one of those simple comfort foods that make you feel warm & fuzzy inside. My sister requested that I make these and given that I’ve never tried them before I was a little hesitant. However, what sister wants sister gets so I woke up early on Saturday morning and set to make my kitchen a mess with flour.
The biscuits are flaky and the gravy a decadent, savory thick mess that goes oh so well. Make these for your loved ones on a Sunday morning and they shall love you forever.

I CAN’T.
I’m pretty good in the kitchen ok. However even I was impressed with myself over these little morsels of perfection. Anyone who knows me or eats with me knows that my love of crab cakes is a wondrous thing and I am PICKY.
This recipe is Beyonce.
It’s that good.
Do not change a thing.

I look up to Ina Garten immensely. The way she effortlessly entertains, how calm and collected she always is and how she takes simple ideas and ingredients and creates something astoundingly delicious.
Masterchef has been inspiring me this season and my cooking bug is slowly coming back to life. So on this dreary & cloudy Monday I leave you this bright and warm cake that melts in your mouth.

We don’t always follow a Paleo lifestyle.. ok to be honest we’ve been REALLY bad with food habits for the past 6 months or so. Our poor body has definitely been feeling it. We’re in the process of trying to make better food choices with each meal & one of the easiest ways to do that is food prep. It takes a lot of the guess work out of what to eat, and if you’re tired and don’t feel like cooking you’re still covered. (which means no last minute attempts to order pizza because you just CAN’T cook)
Against the Grain by Danielle Walker is one of our favorite Paleo cookbooks, though we can’t wait to get our hands on The Paleo Kitchen this weekend. We love quiche, but heavy cream, cheese and lord knows what else in a delicious pie crust is not that healthy. Danielle’s version creates a crust out of sweet potatoes (YUM) with sausage, rosemary, and eggs. It turned out amazing and our mouth was drooling before it even came out of the oven. Now in the morning we just pop a slice in the oven (or you can microwave) to heat it up and instant Paleo breakfast!
